Sea Scouting History on the Hamble River 1960s

1968 saw two major events for the Hamble based groups:

Sadly the closure of the Training Ship Mercury, with the names of the two troops being merged, in co-operation with the Mercury Old Boys Association, ensured that the birthplace of Sea Scouting is remembered;

For the village troop the honour of being granted Royal Navy Recognition, a distinction only awarded to the top 100 Sea Scout Groups in the United Kingdom, an award that we still carry today.

In 1969 after a lot of fund raising the group was able to have a new permanent hut built on Bartlettes Field. The hut continued to be used as the group headquarters until 1997 when we moved in to the old BP sports and social club in Hamble lane. This hut still remains there today, but is now used as a workshop for boat maintenance.

1966 and a new HQ for the Hamble Sea Scouts, Cubs, Guides, and Brownies.

In 1968 after a lot of hard work Hamble Sea Scouts gained Royal Navy recognition.
